How to Think Like the Person You’re Becoming

Sometimes the belief you need doesn’t come from the version of you that exists right now. And honestly, that’s okay. The “you” today might still be tired, unsure, overwhelmed, or figuring things out. But somewhere inside you is another version—your future self—the one who already did the thing you’re trying to do. The one who pushed through. The one who made it to the other side.

And here’s the interesting part: sometimes the fastest way to move forward is to borrow confidence from that version of you.

Think of it like a simple form of mental time travel. Instead of waiting to feel ready, you picture the version of yourself who already succeeded and let their energy lead the way. You’re not lying to yourself. You’re not pretending. You’re simply letting your future self pull you forward, instead of letting your present fears hold you back.

It’s like asking, “What would the successful version of me do right now?”
Not the exhausted version.
Not the insecure version.
Not the version that spirals into overthinking.

The version who already crossed the finish line.

When you think this way, something huge happens—even if you don’t notice it right away. You start making choices from a place of possibility instead of limitation. You stop shrinking yourself just because the current version of you doesn’t feel perfect. You stop waiting for the right moment and realize the right moment is created by action, not by confidence alone.

You might not have the full belief yet, and that’s normal. Most people think belief shows up first and action comes second. But it’s usually the other way around. Action builds belief. But what gets you to take that first step—especially the scary one—is letting your future self take the lead.

Think of athletes visualizing themselves winning before the game even starts. Think of musicians imagining the crowd before they practice. Think of entrepreneurs picturing their business years before it even exists. They’re not dreaming for fun—they’re mentally stepping into the version of themselves who already succeeded, so they can act like that person now.

You can do the same thing in your everyday life.

If the future you is confident, how would they send that email?
If the future you is brave, how would they speak up in that meeting?
If the future you is focused, how would they spend today?
If the future you is healthier, what small choice would they make right now?

This isn’t about faking it. It’s about practicing becoming the person you’re working toward. Your future self isn’t separate from you—they’re just an upgraded version built from your choices today.

The funny thing is, once you start acting like the future you, the present you begins to change. You start to feel more capable. More grounded. More sure of yourself. You create proof that you can handle things. And the more proof you create, the faster belief shows up.

Borrowing confidence from your future self isn’t magic—it’s a mindset shift. You stop asking, “Can I do this?” and start saying, “How would I do this if I already believed I could?” That single question can change everything.

So the next time you feel unsure, close your eyes and picture the version of you who already made it. Take their hand. Let them lead. And then show up today with their confidence—not because you’re pretending, but because that version of you already exists… you’re just catching up to them.
